API Integration vs. SFTP Integration

Learn about different ways to connect your data to Pequity!

API Integration vs. SFTP Integration

API Integration
  • How it works: Connects directly to your Pequity instance in real-time
  • Data flow: Automated, one-way sync — data is pulled instantly whenever changes happen
  • Setup: Configured on the Pequity side — no manual file handling needed
  • Best for: Teams that want a seamless, hands-off integration with live data updates
  • Examples: Workday, BambooHR, or other HRIS platforms with API capabilities

SFTP Integration
  • How it works: Uses a secure file transfer protocol — your HRIS exports a file, and it gets picked up by Pequity
  • Data flow: Scheduled/batch — data syncs on a set cadence (e.g., daily, nightly)
  • Setup: Done through your local HRIS — Pequity provides the connection details (host, port, credentials) for you to configure on your end
  • Best for: Teams whose HRIS doesn't support a direct API, or those who prefer file-based transfers
  • Examples: Any HRIS that can export CSV/flat files on a schedule

Setup Speed & Considerations

  • API: 2–5 weeks
While powerful, this connection typically requires significant back-and-forth coordination during setup. It can be more complex to implement and is less flexible if changes are needed after it’s in place.
  • SFTP: 2–7 days
This connection is much quicker to implement, requires minimal coordination, and is easier to maintain. It also offers greater flexibility, as updates and adjustments can be made more easily post-setup.
